If you’re like me, you have daydreamed, at some point in your life, of becoming this world-famous writer just like Chimamanda Adichie. You’ve entertained thoughts of being known for your novels or volumes of poetry that keep readers spell-bound and wanting more. You’ve been tantalized by the thought of not just being able to live off writing, but being able to live luxuriously. Fantasies of writing a chapter on the Eiffel Tower, and another chapter at the Taj Mahal….I’m sure you’re loving this picture I’m painting!

I believe all these are possible. As Lupita Nyong’o said, ‘Your dreams are valid.’ You can go as far as you want and create the life you want to have, but certain elements need to be in place to create this cocktail of success you desire. From looking at my life and the life of others around me, I’m convinced that there’s one element that is critical as you desire this successful writing career. Without it, there’s not much hope that your fantasies will turn into reality. This vital element to your success is one thing:

Yes, simply start!

I firmly believe that one of the most important ingredients along the journey to fulfilment and success is starting.

It sounds almost too simple, I know. However, from my own life and from speaking with people, I’ve begun to see that just taking that first step, that first leap of faith seems too daunting for so many people. There are many reasons for this. Fear is one powerful one. The fear of doing something new, of stepping out of one’s comfort zone is real.

The quest for perfection could be another hurdle on the path to accomplishment. Sometimes, as we analyse the things we think we need to help us start perfectly, we end up not starting at all.

For me, I knew I needed to start putting my work out there and needed to blog more intentionally. But, for a long while, I didn’t. Why? Simply because I wanted to have the perfect website, with the perfect graphic designer to provide me with the perfect images that would make my portfolio perfect! What did all these have to do with just simply writing???

Don’t get me wrong – I believe that you should aim for excellence in everything you do. But I also believe that you must do your best work within the circumstances in which you find yourself. As you pour your heart into the work and keep moving, you’ll keep getting better and keep heading to that place of excellence you had envisioned at the beginning. But you’ll never get there if you don’t start!

If you’re reading this, it means that I got over my desire for a perfect start and decided to start anyway. I hope to discover perfection along my journey but at least, I’m on my way and I’m not where I used to be.
